Sports in Turkey 2026: Gym, Pool and Activity Costs
· Updated:
Sports in Turkey for expats: 2026 gym and pool costs in Istanbul, football tickets, skiing, diving and the sports facilities in residential complexes.
Sports in Turkey come down to three main options for anyone living in Istanbul: private gyms, where a basic membership costs roughly 7,000 to 8,000 lira a month according to a September 2026 report in the Nefes newspaper; municipal sports complexes, which are far cheaper under the 2026 tariff; and the sports facilities inside residential complexes (called "sites"). Beyond these, Turkey offers something for almost every taste, from skiing and diving to hiking and football. This guide gathers the costs, the sign-up process and practical tips for expats.
Cost of Sports in Istanbul: Private Gym or Municipal Complex?
The main question for most families who have just arrived in Istanbul is how much to set aside for sports each month. The answer depends on whether you use a private chain gym or the large Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) halls and pools, which run under the name Spor İstanbul.

The table below shows part of the 2026 İBB sports facility tariff that applies to individuals and families:

Private and Chain Gyms
According to a Nefes column published on September 28, 2026, the cost of working out at gyms in Turkey has risen by about 30 percent compared with last year. The figures in that report:
| Type of service | Approximate cost (lira) |
|---|---|
| Basic gym membership | 7,000 to 8,000 per month |
| Membership with trainer and pool | About 60,000 per year |
| Gyms in the Zekeriyaköy area | 8,000 to 20,000 per month |
| Private reformer Pilates | 10,000 to 12,000 for 8 sessions |
| Personal trainer (Zekeriyaköy) | 2,000 to 3,000 per session |
The same report says gyms in central European-side districts such as Beşiktaş, Şişli and Levent are usually more expensive than those on the Asian side, such as Kadıköy and Ataşehir. So if you have not chosen where to live yet, sports is also one of the items in the real cost of living in Istanbul.
Checklist Before Signing a Gym Contract
- Read the whole contract: many gyms sell annual memberships paid in monthly installments, and cancelling is not easy.
- Get the freezing terms (dondurma) and the early termination penalty in writing.
- Ask whether peak hours or certain time slots are restricted.
- If you need separate women-only sessions, ask the facility before you register.
- Registration usually requires a passport or residence permit card; bring it with you.
Sports Facilities in Residential Complexes (Sites)
Many new-build projects in Istanbul are developed as "sites", where a pool, gym, sauna and children's playground are part of the shared amenities. For a family that exercises every day, these facilities can remove the cost of an outside gym.

But these amenities are not free: the cost of maintaining the pool and gym is included in the monthly building fee (aidat), which is usually higher in sites with many amenities. Before buying, ask for the aidat amount and compare it with the cost of an outside gym. You can find details of these costs in the article on annual running costs of an apartment in Istanbul, and for one-off purchase costs such as title deed (tapu) tax, see the property buying cost calculator for Turkey.

Some of the projects ALO TURKEY presents, including Babacan Port Royal and Sinpaş Boulevard Sefaköy in Küçükçekmece, have an indoor pool or gym. Ask our advisors for the full list of amenities for each project, because facilities differ between units and blocks.
Outdoor Sports in Istanbul
Istanbul is a crowded city, but it offers good space for walking, running and cycling:
- Marmara and Bosphorus shorelines: The coastal path from Kadıköy to Bostancı on the Asian side and Bakırköy beach on the European side are full of runners and cyclists in the morning.
- Forests and parks: Belgrad Forest (Belgrad Ormanı) in the north of the city has long walking and running trails. For a fuller list, read parks and green spaces in Istanbul.
- Bike sharing: The Istanbul municipality runs the İsbike bike-sharing system along many coastal routes.
- Recreational fishing: On the piers and along the Bosphorus shore you will always see amateur anglers, one of the most common and low-cost pastimes in the city.

Mass Participation Running Events
Istanbul has two major mass running events every year. The Istanbul Half Marathon was held for the 21st time on April 19, 2026. The main Istanbul Marathon is usually held in autumn, and its route runs from the Asian side to the European side; check the organizer's official website each year for dates and registration conditions. To get to the start line, see the guide to public transport in Istanbul.
Football and Watching Sports Events
Football is the most popular sport in Turkey. In the 2025-2026 season the Turkish Super League had eighteen teams, seven of them from Istanbul, which means a top-flight match is played in the city almost every week. Basketball and volleyball (especially women's volleyball) also have many fans.

Buying Football Tickets as a Foreigner
Tickets for Turkish football matches are sold electronically through the Passo system, and the supporter card formerly called Passolig is now offered under the name Passo Taraftar. From the 2025-2026 season, Turkish citizens can enter the stadium with a chip ID card. The registration conditions for foreigners (with a passport or residence permit card) may change, so check them on the official Passo website and in the host club's announcement before buying, and buy tickets only through official channels.
Adventure and Nature Sports in Turkey
Another attractive side of sports in Turkey is its nature. Outside Istanbul, the country is one of the most varied in the region for outdoor sports:
| Sport | Well-known destinations | Best season |
|---|---|---|
| Skiing and snowboarding | Uludağ in Bursa, Kartalkaya, Erciyes, Palandöken | Winter, depending on snow |
| Diving | Kaş and the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts | Spring to autumn |
| Paragliding | Babadağ above Ölüdeniz, Fethiye | Spring to autumn |
| Windsurfing and kitesurfing | Alaçatı and Gökova | Summer |
| Rafting | Köprülü Canyon near Antalya | Spring and summer |
| Hiking | The Lycian Way (Likya Yolu), the Kaçkar Mountains | Spring and autumn; Kaçkar in summer |
The Lycian Way, which the Culture Routes Society (Kültür Rotaları Derneği) puts at about 500 kilometers, runs along the coast from Fethiye to near Antalya, and you can walk just one or several stages of it. For skiing, read the full guide to winter sports in Turkey, and for swimming and beaches in the city itself, see the best beaches in Istanbul.

Sports for Children and Teenagers
For families, municipal complexes are the cheapest way to start: under the 2026 tariff, a water sports class with two sessions a week costs 1,200 lira per month and a figure skating school costs 1,900 lira per month. Many local municipalities (such as Kadıköy or Beylikdüzü) also run their own summer and winter courses. Schools usually have teams and extracurricular sports classes as well; for school enrollment, see the guide to schools in Turkey. If you are choosing a family-friendly neighborhood, the best areas of Istanbul for families will also help.
One important point: before enrolling your child in contact sports or swimming, make sure the family's health insurance is active. Details are in the guide to health insurance in Turkey.
